A Name That Fits Who We Have Become

There comes a point in the life of every successful organization when you have to look at yourself and ask a simple question: Does the way we describe ourselves still reflect who we are? For the Murrieta/Wildomar Chamber of Commerce, the answer increasingly became clear.

We have grown.

Not away from Murrieta and Wildomar, but outward from the strong foundation those communities have helped us build.

That distinction is important.

For years, we have been incredibly proud to serve the businesses of Murrieta and Wildomar and to work directly alongside both cities. Those relationships aren’t changing. Our commitment to those communities isn’t changing. What has changed is the reach of our membership and the role our organization plays throughout Southwest Riverside County.

Today, our members don’t stop at a city limit sign.

They are located throughout Southwest Riverside County, in our cities and our unincorporated communities. They employ people who live in neighboring cities. Their customers come from across the region. Their employees commute across city boundaries every morning. Their vendors, partners, and opportunities are regional.

Business simply doesn’t operate according to the lines on a map.

And increasingly, neither do we.

That’s why the Murrieta/Wildomar Chamber of Commerce is becoming The Chamber of Southwest Riverside County.

This isn’t simply a new name. It is a better reflection of the organization we have already become.

Our Work Has Become Regional

One of the biggest changes in our organization over the years has been the growth of our role in economic development.

We continue to advocate for businesses, create connections, promote our members, and provide the programs people traditionally associate with a Chamber of Commerce. But our work today goes much further.

We work directly with Riverside County Economic Development on initiatives designed to strengthen entrepreneurship and economic opportunity throughout the region.

We are also the organization behind the Murrieta Innovation Center, which is developing into a regional hub for life sciences innovation and entrepreneurship. That work isn’t just about one building or one city. It’s about creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, attracting investment, supporting emerging companies, and helping develop an innovation economy here in Southwest Riverside County.

Those efforts benefit all of us.

A successful company doesn’t just create jobs for residents of the city where its office happens to be located. A growing industry creates opportunities throughout an entire region.

The same is true of workforce development, infrastructure, advocacy, entrepreneurship and business attraction.

Our economies are connected. Our communities are connected. And our businesses are certainly connected.

An Invitation to the Entire Business Community

There has also been another, much simpler reason for this change. We kept hearing the same question.

Businesses from communities outside Murrieta and Wildomar would approach us about getting involved with the Chamber and ask some version of: “Can we join even though we’re not in Murrieta or Wildomar?”

Of course you can.

But eventually we had to recognize something important. If people repeatedly have to ask whether they are welcome, perhaps our identity isn’t communicating what we think it is.

We never want a business owner in Southwest Riverside County to look at our name and assume there isn’t a place for them at our table. There is.

That’s one of the most exciting things about becoming The Chamber of Southwest Riverside County. Our name will now say what our actions have been saying for years:

You belong here. Better Together Does Not Mean Going It Alone

With a regional name also comes responsibility.

There are excellent chambers, business organizations, cities, economic development professionals, and community leaders doing important work throughout Southwest Riverside County.

Our goal isn’t to replace any of them. Quite the opposite. We want to strengthen those relationships.

The challenges facing businesses today don’t conveniently stay inside jurisdictional boundaries. Workforce issues don’t. Transportation doesn’t. Housing doesn’t. Economic development doesn’t. And opportunities for innovation and investment don’t either.

We can accomplish more when organizations bring their strengths, relationships, and ideas together than any of us can accomplish independently.

Which brings me to three words that have become increasingly meaningful to our organization:

Business, Better Together.

That’s our tagline, but I think it’s also a pretty good philosophy for where Southwest Riverside County goes next.

We believe businesses are stronger when they’re connected to one another.

We believe communities are stronger when their businesses succeed.

We believe cities benefit when we think regionally about economic opportunities.

And we believe our entire region becomes more competitive when we spend less time worrying about which side of a city boundary an opportunity lands on and more time making sure those opportunities land here.

The Next Chapter

There is a lot of history in the name Murrieta/Wildomar Chamber of Commerce, and we are proud of it. We aren’t erasing that history. We’re building on it.

Murrieta and Wildomar will continue to be important parts of our identity, our work, and our partnerships. They helped create the foundation that allowed this organization to grow into what it is today.

But organizations should have the courage to evolve when the communities they serve evolve.

Our membership has grown. Our partnerships have grown. Our economic development work has grown. Our impact has grown. And now our name is growing with us.

The Chamber of Southwest Riverside County represents the next chapter of an organization that believes deeply in the potential of this region and the people who choose to build businesses here.

Whether you’ve been a member for decades, joined us last month, own a business somewhere else in Southwest Riverside County, or have never thought of yourself as a “Chamber person,” I hope you’ll see this change for what we intend it to be:

An invitation.

An invitation to connect. An invitation to participate. An invitation to build something bigger than any one business, organization, or city can build alone. Because the future of Southwest Riverside County won’t be built one city at a time. We’ll build it together.

Business, Better Together.
