America’s Other Sport

by Steve Haubrick

In the US, Football rules! However, unlike every other country in the world, the football that rules here is different. American Football is far and away the most popular sport in the United States followed by basketball, baseball, and hockey.

What about futbol or as we call it, soccer? It has had many attempted false starts. Several professional leagues started and then folded. In 1994, we received the ultimate prize by being allowed to host the World Cup. This is the SuperBowl of Soccer for the world. It is held every four years and draws worldwide audiences that make the SuperBowl’s audience dwarf in comparison.

Our latest professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS), began two years (1996) after this very successful World Cup. The league’s establishment was part of America’s bid for the World Cup. The first season had 10 teams with five in each conference. Each team was allowed to have four marquee players in order to promote the league. Since then, the league has continued to expand and now supports 19 teams with three based in Canada.

The league’s success can partially be attributed to its financial setup. Unlike the NFL or NBA, ownership resides centrally with the league and each individual team has an owner-operator. The league began with several large investors managing numerous teams due to the lack of interest. Currently, the 19 teams have 17 different operators. In addition, the MLS is close to full profitability and intends on further expansion.

Despite the above, the league is not the NFL or NBA. However, it has gained a reputation for providing quality soccer in the America. Our region hosts two teams, LA Galaxy and Chiva USA. The Galaxy won three titles, including last year’s championship. Their players include arguably the best American player, Landon Donovan, and a premier British player, David Beckham. Both teams play at the Home Depot Center in Carson. This is a specialized soccer stadium where almost every seat gives you a perfect view of the game. You should check out a game so you can truly appreciate the sport
