Giuliana Duron, a Bank of America Student Leader, was chosen to intern at Michelle’s Place Cancer Resource Center. The Bank of America Student Leader Program is an initiative in their ongoing commitment to youth employment and economic stability. The program sees 100’s of applications in each region and Giuliana was one of four selected to participate, with only 225 selected nationwide. The program focuses on preparing a diverse pipeline of community-minded young students with the leadership training they need to be successful in the workforce.
Giuliana is a student at Chaparral entering her senior year this fall. She is excited to intern with Michelle’s Place as it will give her an idea of how a non-profit organization works and how to balance work and community outreach. “The passion I see here at Michelle’s Place is inspiring and it makes me want to do something that I too am passionate about”, Giuliana said. Her passions fall between government, law, and criminal justice reform. She aspires to work on criminal justice reform, stateside or internationally, and would like to find herself at the U.N. in 15 years. She has designated Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, or U.C. Berkeley as her top school choices.
As part of the Student Leader program, Giuliana will travel to Washington D.C. and join the other 224 student leaders at the National Leader Summit. They will spend time in seminars and learning sessions to discuss how government, business and the nonprofit sector work together to address critical community needs. “The interns that come to us are so amazing; they truly are student leaders and we couldn’t be any more excited to have Giuliana with us for 2 months”, said Kim Gerrish, Executive Director of Michelle’s Place.
As a paid internship, Giuliana is working 35 hours/week at Michelle’s Place and learning first-hand how she can help shape here community now and in the future. She will use her experience from the many clubs she participates in including: Associated Student Body, Peer Leaders, Mock Trial, Science Olympia, Youth Court, Assisteens, National Honor Society, and Cross Country. When she is not spending time on her after school activities, Giuliana enjoys going to the beach, movie marathons, reading good books, and visiting cute coffee shops with her mom.
