The Reason for the (Valentine) Season

Everywhere we go during February, there are hearts, roses, and chocolates, but let’s not forget the reason for the Valentine’s season… It’s to show your loved ones how much they mean to you! Valentine’s Day has been celebrated for thousands of years but, did you know Americans aren’t the only ones who celebrate this wonderful holiday? Mexico, the United Kingdom,  Australia, Italy, Denmark, and many more also celebrate Valentine’s Day!

It is believed that Valentine’s Day originated from the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which celebrated the coming of spring, fertility, and marriage. However, in the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I forbade the celebration of said festival and was thought to have replaced it with St. Valentine’s Day. There are multiple legends telling of who St. Valentine was, but one of the most well known is of St. Valentine of Terni. It is believed St. Valentine of Terni defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare men from fighting in war and keep them with their loved ones. It is also believed that the same St. Valentine was martyred by emperor Claudius II Gothicus and had fallen in love with the jailer’s daughter, signing a letter to her, “from your Valentine” before his death.

Have you ever looked at Valentine’s Day cards and wondered why birds and Cupid are the symbols associated? Cupid is the Roman god of love, commonly depicted as a baby with angel wings and a bow and arrow. As for birds, it was thought that their mating seasons began in February when love is in the air. Hearts, candy, flowers, but especially red roses are all seen as symbols of love and beauty which are exchanged by lovers and friends all over the world for this special day.
