Congratulations to your teen . . . they just received their permit! Emotions are high . . . in all the excitement you take them to the nearest parking lot or quiet residential area to begin their practice.
But wait!
Let’s look a little closer at the bottom of the pink certificate issued to them.
“I, (print name)_____________________, parent/guardian of the student named above, understand that the permit issued upon submission of this certificate is not valid until the student begins behind-the-wheel instruction and the instructor has signed the instructor has signed the permit.”
Despite the fact that every parent signs this document, it’s clear that not all actually read the verbiage. This driving school, and we are sure many others, often receives calls from parents anxious to enroll their child in the required six hours with an instructor – “to be completed quickly before their teen takes the behind-the-wheel exam in a couple of weeks.” We wish we could accommodate these requests, but it is rarely possible given the volume of students we serve.

We get it. The DMV verbiage on the certificate is tiny. The verbiage on their website is confusing. No judgment from us one bit that something got missed along the way.
With that said; the curriculum is uniquely designed to fill the six months between the moment the permit is issued and the time the student can take their behind-the-wheel exam to obtain their license. Students must practice with a licensed adult in between lessons for a total of 50 hours as required by the DMV, but it is our opinion that 70 + hours produces a truly seasoned and safe driver.
We have detailed lesson plans with copious notes to share with the student and guardian as they make their way through the program, but here is a general idea of what to expect:
SESSION ONE – 2 HOURS
Student/parent orientation, driving preparation, understanding steering & control, braking, vision, residential driving, turns, stops, & starts at intersection, turning & backing under various conditions, parking forward & backing out, driving assignment sheet.
SESSION TWO – 2 HOURS
Parallel parking, rules of the road, throttle / brake control, lane changes, speed & space management, turns at intersections, right, left, & U-turns, 3-point turns, uphill/downhill parking, driving assignment sheet.
SESSION THREE – 2 HOURS
Freeway driving, entering & exiting freeways, pre-drive test, night time driving (depending upon appt. time), driving assignment sheet, DMV certification of completion of behind-the-wheel training.
In addition to the above, as current or retired law enforcement, Teen Road to Safety instructors impart a great deal of wisdom and the psychology of good defensive driving. It is our goal to not simply help your child pass the DMV exam, but truly become a safe and conscientious driver.
