Tips for Removing a Hard Water Ring in Your Sink

Water running from stainless bathroom tap into white porcelain sink

Question“Help! I can’t find anything to remove the brown circle ring around the drain in the
sink. Hard water maybe?”

Answer: Hi CB! Let’s tackle that pesky hard water ring together. Here are some friendly tips
to get your porcelain sink sparkling clean. If you have a different type of sink, like copper or
special stone, these methods might not be suitable. Also, always start with the gentlest cleaning
methods and work your way up to avoid unnecessary wear on your surfaces.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Barkeepers Friend
  • Citric Acid
  • Old Toothbrush
  • Pumice Stone (for toilet bowl rings)

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Identify the Stain:
    • If there’s a pink tinge, that’s bacteria mixed with hard water.
    • Spray it with hydrogen peroxide to kill the bacteria first.
  2. Barkeepers Friend Paste:
    • Make a paste with Barkeepers Friend and water.
    • Apply it to the ring and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
    • Use an old toothbrush to scrub away the stain.
  3. Citric Acid Treatment:
    • If the stain persists, wet the area and sprinkle some citric acid on it.
    • Let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub with the toothbrush.
  4. Pumice Stone Magic:
    • Still there? Don’t worry! Grab a pumice stone (the kind used for toilet bowls).
    • Ensure the stone is wet and keep it wet throughout the process.
    • Gently work the wet pumice over the hard water ring, being careful not to scratch the metal plug.

Important Note:

  • Always be cautious around the metal plug and ring to avoid any damage during cleaning.
