Grow Our Own Talent

City of Murrieta and Murrieta School District Partner to Develop Student Internships

As part of Murrieta Valley Unified School District’s college and career preparation, the district, City of Murrieta and the Workforce Development Center are working closely together to “Grow Our Own Talent” by developing business/district partnerships to develop internship opportunities for students within our community.

Local businesses will have the opportunity to offer internships in the areas of engineering, green technology, drafting, business, culinary arts, medical, sports medicine, the automotive industry and media arts, including graphic design, web design, social media, photography, and video production. These non-paid internships will allow MVUSD students to apply their classroom learning and skills in a real world work environment. Students will be required to go through a formal hiring process including an application and interview.
Students will have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with local businesses to utilize the 21st century skills they have acquired in the classroom and apply their learning and skills with local business needs.
Kaleb Bradley, shown left, served an internship at Ambassador Energy in 2011. In addition to his AutoCAD training, engineering teacher Pete Matus said Bradley was well-equipped with marketable skills. “These kids don’t realize how talented they are. Being able to do an excel spreadsheet, navigate the web with ease and their familiarity with social media – along with their energy and positive attitude, they have a lot to offer.” Ambassador President Kelly Smith said the students bring a lot to the table, “It’s a win-win.” she said, “We can show them what a strong work ethic looks like and they bring a quickness about learning new things that is amazing.”
Murrieta Mayor Rick Gibbs commented that “the city is very pleased to be working in partnership with the MVUSD and the County Workforce Board to help our very talented high school students find internship opportunities with area businesses. This is one more example of our on-going economic development Partnership for Success to grow and retain local talent and to continue to provide for a prosperous future for Murrieta.”
