Watch For the Pedestrian

by Sergeant Jay A. Froboese

Here at the police department we often get complaints from pedestrians that cars are not yielding to them while crossing the street. I have found the most common reason drivers do not “properly” yield for pedestrians is impatience. People that we stop for this violation usually tell me they saw the pedestrian, but were impatient or late, so they pushed it and drove around or in front of the pedestrian. A bad thing to do no doubt!! First and foremost, if your impatience seriously injured or killed a pedestrian, how would live with that the rest of your life? Not worth it!!

Pedestrians out there, listen up. As a pedestrian, please do your part to follow the vehicle code and use crosswalks. Do not attempt those mid-block crossings. Also, remember the vehicle code says a pedestrian has the “duty to use due care for his or her safety when crossing the street, and may not suddenly leave the curb or unnecessarily delay traffic while crossing.”

Parents, please teach your children how to safely cross the street. I am speaking to all parents, but really would like parents of our middle schools to sit up and take notice. The chances I see these middle school kids taking as they run across the streets every morning and afternoon is frightening. I can only speak to so many of them so parents please help us teach your middle school children to use the crosswalks. Please teach them, and ask them to use the crosswalks where crossing guards are located. Also, parents, remember every time you are driving, your actions are being watched by your little passengers. You are always teaching your kids about safety and respect while operating your motor vehicle.

So here’s the deal!! I want everyone in the City of Murrieta to drive as if a police officers is right alongside or behind you. Drive the speed limit or below, signal for every turn, check your mirrors regularly, and always yield to every pedestrian.

You are all capable of these good driving habits, so be safe and help all our pedestrians out by watching for them and giving them a break.
