Chuck Washington Appointed 3rd District Supervisor for the County of Riverside

On March 4th, California Governor Jerry Brown appointed City of Temecula Mayor Pro-Tem Chuck Washington to serve as Riverside County Supervisor representing the 3rd District of the County of Riverside which encompasses the incorporated cities of Hemet, San Jacinto, Murrieta and Temecula, and the unincorporated communities surrounding these cities.

On behalf of the City of Temecula, Mayor Jeff Comerchero congratulates newly sworn-in County Supervisor Chuck Washington in support of Governor Brown’s appointment:

“Chuck Washington has been an outstanding local elected official and has served our City very well since his first election to Temecula’s City Council in 2003. He has continually demonstrated his commitment to our citizens in the time he has invested and with a leadership style that has always been fair, caring and reasoned. While I regret that his appointment to the County Board of Supervisors means we will lose him on our own Council, I join my colleagues in wishing Chuck all the best in his new, broader leadership role. I know that he will continue to serve his constituents, including those within the City of Temecula, with great aplomb and continued dedication. — Jeff Comerchero Mayor, City of Temecula

Mayor Comerchero’s sentiment is shared among all Temecula City Council Members that the loss of former Mayor Pro-Tem Washington’s instrumental leadership to the City of Temecula will become the overall region’s gain. As an elected Temecula City Council Member since 2003 and Mayor twice, County Supervisor Chuck Washington has successfully served the citizens of Temecula, together with his council colleagues, by placing a strong priority on public safety, creating opportunities for higher education and economic development, and ensuring a family-friendly community with a high quality of life for its citizens. As a member of multiple regional organizations, and also as a former Mayor and Council Member for the City of Murrieta, Supervisor Washington recognizes that a regional perspective on these priority issues is critical to the success of all individual communities.

Washington’s resignation on the Temecula City Council became effective on March 5th.“While I am saddened to leave my Temecula family, I am excited and honored to have been selected by Governor Brown over very qualified candidates to represent the 3rd District of Riverside County. I look forward to the challenges and getting to know the other cities and communities within the District. I wish my City Council colleagues well going forward and in the selection of my replacement.” — Chuck Washington, Riverside County Supervisor, 3rd District

Governor Brown’s appointment of [now former] Temecula Mayor Pro-Tem Washington to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors demonstrates a pattern of successful leaders originating from the City Council of the City of Temecula. Supervisor Washington will now fill the remaining County 3rd District term through 2016; a position previously held by California Senator Jeff Stone, 28th District, who was elected to the State Senate in November, 2014.

State Senator Jeff Stone began as a Temecula City Council Member in 1992 serving three terms including one year alongside Washington before being elected to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. Senator Jeff Stone welcomed Governor Jerry Brown’s appointment releasing a statement that he expects great things from Supervisor Washington:

“The residents of the 3rd District will be well served by Chuck Washington. His experience as both a Councilman and Mayor of both Temecula and Murrieta will allow him to step right and get to work for the residents of Riverside County.” — Jeff Stone, California State Senator, 28th District

Pursuant to the Government Code, the City of Temecula has 60 days from the date of the vacancy, March 5th, to fill the vacant council seat by appointment or call for a special election.
