SCDO Launches New Employee Readiness Certificate Program

higherCalling all businesses. Support our youth with your presence not your pocketbook.

The Southwest Community Development Organization (SCDO) is proud to announce the creation of a certificate program developed to help the first-time job seeker develop the skills needed to find, get and keep a job. The HIGHER (How I Get Hired Employee Readiness) Certificate Program conducted a beta test at Murrieta Mesa High School Spring 2012. HIGHER is an eight-week, no-cost program that brings guest business teachers to the high school to cover such relevant topics as goal setting, career exploration, job search skills, and keeping-the-job skills. The program finished its first full session last fall with 70 graduates from the high schools in the Murrieta Valley and Temecula Valley Unified School Districts.

Through a series of forums, educators and business leaders met to discuss concerns, problems, assumptions, and priorities that were needed to identify the skills needed for first-time employees. The certificate program was one of the priorities identified. The business and education community worked on the joint venture and built a program that addresses the main concerns of the business world.

SCDO will be looking for businesses to embrace the program by giving additional weight to the graduates of the program in the hiring process. The organization is also looking for business leaders to volunteer to teach one 1 ½ hour session once a year. Information on the program curriculum, volunteer openings, and endorsement opportunities is available by contacting SCDO at 951-694-9800. Take a look at the promotional video at www.SCDOonline.org.
