With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season upon us, it’s easy to forget how much water is needed to prepare the big holiday meals. Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District has a few tips to help you save water during the holiday season.
Consider thawing your turkey in the fridge, rather than under running water. If washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run from the tap to rinse. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water for maximum water efficiency.
Scrape plates and leftover foods into the garbage rather than down the sink disposal. Composting vegetable food waste instead of putting into the garbage disposal saves water from running down the sink, too.
Wash fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap. Cut back on the amount of glasses that will need to be washed. Designate one glass for each of your guests to use during the holiday celebration.
Instead of sending pipe-clogging fats and grease down the drain, pour pan drippings into an empty jar or can. Allow the grease to cool and solidify and then throw the container in the trash.
