Azusa Pacific University (APU) realizes veterans are extraordinary students and it is a pleasure serving these students. As I have reviewed various internet sources, and from my experience, I saw a correlation between veteran student’s attributes and how they positively impact the classroom by their contributing unique skills and experiences.
Exposure to military the culture can bring an added learning perspective to the classroom. Here are some themes I’ve learned about from our APU military students.
- Camaraderie: No matter what branch of the military they might have served in, there is a strong connection and respect among them. Veteran students study together and encourage each other to ensure academic success. Also, a strong sense of patriotism is present in these students.
- Structure and Discipline: Veteran students like the structure of a well-ordered classroom and they appreciate knowing the goals of the instructor in advance.
- Global Thinking: Many post 9/11 veterans have been sent abroad bringing a significant level of real-world international experience to the classroom. They bring first-hand life experience regarding politics, different cultures and current affairs, and can contribute added insight to class discussion.
- Goal oriented: Many military veterans are serious about completing their education. They know why they are going back to earn their education and are motivated to obtain their degree as soon as possible. They are excited to plan the next chapter in their career.
- Leadership: Veteran students have sound leadership skills. They inspire and influence other students by providing purpose, direction and motivation.
Student veterans are the kind of role models we need at our colleges and in our workplace. APU continues to provide veteran students with the tools they need to be academically successful.
