St. John’s University Celebrates 46th Year of Excellence

EDUCATION-St.-John's-University-logo-IN-ARTICLESt. John’s University celebrates 46 years of offering degree programs. Founded in 1969, S.J.U.’s enduring success results from maintaining traditional educational values with the convenience of self-paced distance learning programs.

The corporate office of St. John’s University is located near Ynez and Winchester at 40945 County Center Drive, Suite H, in Temecula.  S.J.U. is a privately accredited Christian University serving both local and distance learning students across the United States.

S.J.U. is a recognized leader in the field of holistic health curriculum, offering a comprehensive Certification Program, and Master and Ph.D. degree program in Clinical Hypnotherapy. Nearly a half century of S.J.U. alumni include leaders in the fields of medicine, nursing, counseling, psychology, social work, and education.

Dr. Pamela Winkler, S.J.U. President since 1995, said, “It is important for all of us to take a more active role in improving our physical and mental health. There really is a lot we can do to feel better and enjoy a higher quality of life”.  Dr. Winkler is an Educational Psychologist and Clinical Hypnotherapist with over 50 years of experience. Director of the University Counseling Services, Dr. Winkler has seen thousands of students and clients successfully enhance their lives.

Dr. Winkler explained, “Our lives are filled with so many challenges that we need to learn how to manage that stress before it creates other problems that can really make us sick. Our minds can enable us to be healthy and happy or our minds can cause depression and anxiety that eventually weaken our immune system and make us sick.  Once we control stress by controlling our thoughts and emotions, then we can get back on track and we start to feel better.”

Many teaching hospitals, such as the Mayo Clinic, include a wide range of Hypnotherapy services in their patient care, such as labor and delivery, treating severe burns, controlling diabetes and obesity, managing depression and PTSD, treating chronic pain, and recovery from addictions.

The nursing profession has been a leader in the use of hypnotherapy in many areas of nursing, including emergency care, pediatrics, orthopedics, psychiatrics, and geriatrics.  “The emphasis on holistic wellness,” according to Dr. Winkler, “is a natural trend when we realize that we cannot separate the mind from the body. The study of psychosomatic illness shows our minds play a critical role in our health.”

St. John’s University offers three levels of Certification in Clinical Hypnotherapy as well as the Master of Arts degree, Ph.D. and post-doctoral programs in Hypnotherapy.  Graduate students may participate in original research as part of their thesis or dissertation.

St. John’s University partners with other universities and teaching hospitals in acquiring grants that fund important and innovative research.  Hypnotherapy research can contribute innovative treatment of reversing premature aging, managing blood pressure, smoking cessation and improved lung function, managing obesity and diabetes, recovery from kidney and heart damage, and prevention of pancreatic and breast cancer.
