Ergonomic products are more than just futuristic looking desk accessories. They serve the purpose of increased productivity and decreased injury. When the body operates in a natural relaxed position rather than a stressed position the employee can maintain productivity for a longer period of time. Many large corporations have invested in on-site workstation evaluations. Simple tips such as decreasing the use of overhead lighting and replacing with desk top task lighting lead to the elimination of eye strain. Repositioning a desk so that the employee’s main tasking area isn’t facing a window also helps to reduce glare, eye strain and headaches.
Making the tiny investment to purchase gel wrist rests for the front of a keyboard raises the wrist to a more comfortable angle. Many employees enjoy the convenience of a portable laptop while traveling or in the field. But when they’re in the office they are likely to find themselves hunched over their laptop for long periods of time causing back, neck and eyestrain. Using an external laptop stand, keyboard or mouse allows a position that provides maximum height, distance and comfort.
Hands free phone devices aren’t just for driving. Headsets that are connected to the office landline allow for more comfort during heavy calling periods while allowing the employee to be free to use both hands for tasking. Without a headset employees are likely to cradle the phone receiver between their shoulder and ear in order to use both hands for note taking or data entry. Incorporating headsets into a daily routine allows for more efficient multi-tasking and higher productivity. Don’t limit the distribution of headsets to the office receptionist.
Making the small investment to purchase a few ergonomic products for each employee will increase productivity and decrease Workers Compensation Claims. Products can be purchased online or through the catalogs provided by most large office supply dealers.
