Goal Setting

Around the first of every year, we hear in the media and among our friends about the latest New Years resolutions. These are goals that are ironically timed around the first of the year. However, who says that you have to set milestones only once a year.

Making goals, writing them down, sharing them, posting them up, and revisiting them are critical to success. As human beings we constantly say, “I wish I would do this”. The difference between a wish and an accomplishment is the drive a person has to succeed.

In order to succeed, you need to follow the above four steps.

  • First, write down your goals. Merely saying I want to read more or go to the gym is not enough. Writing something down makes it more real and forces you to invest time in wanting to have that goal succeed.
  • Along this line, a key aspect is to share your goals. Simply writing them down gets you involved but by sharing it, you are getting all your friends and family involved in your goals. You will see them encouraging you and asking you questions about your progress. This forces you to work towards your goal so you don’t disappoint yourself or your friends.
  • Beyond the above, post your goals up in a prominent location. This will serve as a constant reminder to you of what you are trying to accomplish. This could be on your dresser mirror, bathroom door, or some other noticeable place. As a result, you’ll find that you are reading or reminding yourself of your goals almost every day.
  • Lastly, always revisit your goals regularly. Depending on the goals, you should do this at least every quarter. By revisiting, you are encouraging yourself to stick to the agreement you made with yourself along with being able to modify the goals should your life situation changes.
