Most young people don’t stray far from home when they grow up. In fact, studies show that nearly six in ten young adults live within 10 miles of where they grew up, and eight in ten stay within 100 miles. This means that the kids in our classrooms, in our sports leagues, in our leadership programs, and shopping in our community today are the very ones who will shape the Valley of tomorrow. Through the Riverside County Police Activities League (PAL), SAFE Family Justice Centers is making sure those futures are full of hope and possibility.
Since 2004, PAL has been building bridges between kids, cops, and community. Working alongside law enforcement partners from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Murrieta, Menifee, and Indio Police Departments, as well as the District Attorney’s Office, PAL provides weekly curriculum-based programming for youth ages 5 to 18. The program offers safe spaces for young people to connect with mentors, gain life skills, and discover their own potential. But PAL goes further—it introduces youth to local businesses and resources, emphasizes good citizenship, and helps them imagine futures worth pursuing right here in the Valley.
Over the last four years, I’ve had the privilege of watching one young man’s journey through PAL, and his story reflects the heart of the program. When he first joined us, he was a young man filled with frustration and anger, unsure of his path forward. Slowly, with consistent support from mentors and peers, he began to open up. He took part in leadership trips, pushed himself toward personal milestones, and grew more confident with each step. Today, he shows up with humor, energy, and a strong sense of responsibility. He looks out for his fellow mentees, supports his mentors, and has become a leader others look up to. Watching him evolve into a confident, future-focused young man has been a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
These stories aren’t isolated. They are what happens when youth have consistent mentors, opportunities to lead, and reasons to stay rooted in their community. PAL emphasizes character development, service, and leadership, with the goal of empowering kids to become agents of change in their own neighborhoods. And the results are being recognized far beyond our region—this year, Riverside County PAL was honored as the National PAL Chapter of the Year.
But PAL’s impact isn’t limited to mentoring sessions. It also shines in the ways in which we gather as a community. Whether it’s holiday celebrations, neighborhood resource fairs, or seasonal family nights, our events create spaces where kids and parents connect with law enforcement and one another in positive, memorable ways. These gatherings remind us that prevention and safety can also be joyful, and that strong communities are built not only through programs but also through shared experiences. One of our favorite traditions is right around the corner: on October 21st from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., SAFE FJC will host our annual Trunk or Treat—a night filled with decorated cars, candy, and laughter. It’s a celebration of connection and a reminder that the Valley is at its strongest when families, youth, and mentors come together. Because when our kids are given reasons to show up, they don’t just grow up here—they grow into the leaders who will carry the Valley forward.
