Whether you are always striving towards better health or you only rarely give your health a thought, it is valuable to conduct self-assessments a few times a year. These assessments can be eye opening. When people complete a health assessment, they often realize things such as: their big hairy audacious goals at work have knocked their workout to the bottom of their to do list, or they don’t remember the last time they cooked healthy meals at home. Without these check-ins you could easily head down the wrong road for far too long. I’ve worked in healthcare for 25 years and it happened to me! I realized in my last assessment that everything came before my workouts. I made a few quick changes and nearly 7 months later, I have worked out every single morning.
People often wait until their body is screaming at them to pay attention to the warning signs. In reality, we should invest in our future health and listen for the whisper. The assessment will help you hear your body’s whisper that something is going in the wrong direction.
Ways your body might be trying to get your attention:
- Headaches
- Not sleeping well
- Lack of energy
- Lack of focus
- Pain
Let’s talk about how to do an assessment. Grab a pen and paper and list out the different areas of your life that you value. Health, career, family, etc.
Step 1 – Write a list of all the things you do right in each category.
Step 2 – Take a minute and pat yourself on the back! I am a firm believer that you should give yourself credit for all that you have done right before you look at what could be improved.
Step 3 – Break each category down even further. For example, health can be broken down into exercise, nutrition/fuel, preventative healthcare, and sleep. Take a moment here and listen for those subtle warning signs.
Step 4 – Grade yourself on each subcategory
As you work through your list, you should start to see all the subcategories that need the most work. Don’t get overwhelmed! Just take a step back and ask yourself which one thing would have the greatest impact on your life.
This should help you choose your next logical step. Who do you hire and what new rules do you have to set for yourself? Start to create an action plan. This could be as simple as walking every morning before work, meal prepping, hiring a kinesiologist, or booking your chiropractic visits and other wellness visits out in advance. Each area of your life will impact the other. So, if you really want a thriving business, you should invest in your health. Every day new patients come to me because their health issue has gotten so bad that it is impacting every aspect of their life to such a degree that they have lost hope and are barely even functioning. I love seeing the transformation as they get well and get their lives back and how sometimes seemingly small investments can have such a profound impact.
Not sure what your next logical step is? Do you have a health issue that is preventing your success and are not sure who the right expert is to call? Feel free to reach out to me. I will be happy to provide some insight.
