Temecula Valley Hospital is participating in a partnership with the City of Temecula and UCR School of Medicine in the Future Physician Leaders Program (FPL). The Inland Empire community has faced a healthcare access shortage of physicians for many years. The FPL program was developed to reduce this major issue by mentoring local pre-medical students who want to serve the community as physician leaders.
The seven week summer program includes weekly lectures on topics such as Health Disparities, The Physician Roadmap, Leadership, Role of Community Health Providers, and State of Health in Southwest Riverside County. Physicians have volunteered to provide students with the opportunity to shadow them in four-hour blocks of time. Some shadowing will occur at the hospital, and some will occur in the physician offices. The students get to experience the physician’s every day work duties and patient-doctor interaction in an effort to inspire and motivate them to exhibit the same community contribution. Eighteen students are participating in the inaugural program.
