Are You Blowing Money Out Your Ductwork?

RustyCochranby Rusty Cochran

No matter how good your heating and air conditioning equipment is, if your ductwork has problems, you are wasting your money every time you turn on your thermostat. It’s easy to overlook the ducts that deliver the hot or cool air to your home, but inefficient or damaged ducts can easily add 10%, or much more to your monthly energy bill – duct horror stories of 50-70% losses are not unheard-of!  Older duct tape may have dried up, allowing junctions and splices to open, or other damages may have occurred over the years.

If you think of your ducts as huge hoses, delivering air instead of water, you can begin to see how easy it is to overlook a leaky duct. If water were spilling on your floor, you would notice. But air leaks are much more elusive. And, add to that the fact that most ductwork is hidden from view behind walls, in attics, basements, or crawl spaces, and you can understand how ducts in your home can leak for years without you knowing.

Leaky ducts can also reduce the quality of the air in your home. Just as a leak can allow your heat to escape, in a crawlspace, basement or attic, a leak can draw pollens, dust, molds, or even rodent droppings into your home. This is particularly important if anyone in your house suffers from allergies or other breathing challenges.

Ducts that are not tightly sealed can cost you money and impact your health. Check the ducts you can see regularly, and call on us to thoroughly test the ductwork that’s hidden. Identifying the problem is the first step toward fixing it.
