Now that much of the dust from 2020 has settled, it is time to make decisions about the future of your workforce. Will they be staying remote (work from home), is everyone returning to the office or will you be taking a hybrid approach? A huge component of this decision is the planning for what’s next and 2020 clearly taught us anything is possible. The path you choose must be flexible to allow for future resiliency.
According to the ‘Future of Secure Remote Work Report’ recently published by Cisco, 75% of American respondents indicated in mid-2020 that more than half of their workforce was working remotely compared to only 24% prior to Covid-19. Seemingly overnight the landscape of our workforce changed. What started out as a temporary solution, working from home out of necessity, has turned into its own issue as 46% of survey respondents want to keep it that way. What is interesting is that their opinions are consistent among all businesses regardless of size – small (35%), medium (38%), and large (37%) businesses believe that more than half of their employees will want to remain remote workers after Covid-19.
So, guess where that takes us? Cybersecurity. In order to remain flexible for upcoming workforce trends and potential future business disruptions, you must start with building a seamless and secure infrastructure. Cisco reports that since the start of Covid-19, 64% of American respondents have experienced 25% or more cyber threats or alerts. Threat actors (bad guys) have stepped up their attacks with more phishing attacks to gain access and from there they install malware to compromise your systems and data, or they can exploit gaps in your cybersecurity posture.
At its very core, your cybersecurity structure must address verifying your user’s identity, enable your user to work from anywhere securely, give them access to the programs they need and protect them once they are in your network. Your approach must be multifaceted, consistently challenged, and adopted by your entire organization. It only takes one person, one “accidental” click, to take down your entire organization. Literally, that is all it takes.
It is Q2 2021, the end is in sight. Now let us be sure we keep the traction we have all fought so hard for.
