I intended to write this article about the latest innovations in technology and IT security, but last week I attended an IT conference where a colleague shared his incredible story. John’s IT managed services business is located in Joplin, Missouri. The bulk of his cliental are medical offices. John’s IT business was hit by an EF5 tornado in 2011. His building, computers, servers, and everything else was literally destroyed by the tornado. His clients’ buildings, computers, and servers were completely wiped out as well.
Following the tornado, people needed urgent medical attention from physicians whose offices were gone. To provide urgent care, doctors needed their patients’ medical records which included health history, drug interactions, and prescription refills. All this REAL WORLD information was stored in their local computers and servers that had been destroyed.
John’s first priority after the tornado hit was to ensure all employees and their families were safe. John’s second priority was to get his IT business up and running to support his medical clients and the thousands of medical records needed right away. Fortunately, John’s IT firm was committed to applying IT best practices and dedicated top tier vendors. All of the data was safely backed up on the cloud, and tested regularly for continuity.
As a result, John’s business was up and running 5 hours and all of his IT managed service clients were up and running within 72 hours! Despite the complete devastation, every one of his clients was able to see patients, fill prescriptions, and file insurance claims- thus making a difference in thousands of peoples’ lives.
When I hear an inspiring story such as John’s, it re-enforces why I love what I do and the dedication we have IT best practices and top tier support.
