Don’t Let These 4 Myths Keep You from Getting the Care You Deserve

With home care, there are often misunderstandings. For most, it is a blessing, a secure way for parents or loved one’s to be cared for in the home. Others are nervous about letting strangers into their home. Here are some common myths about home care, and the realities.

  1. Caregivers can’t be trusted.
We have all heard the stories. However, these cases often involve caregivers that do not come from a reputable home care company. At FirstLight, Home Care, all of our caregivers go through a course of training developed over many years and are actual employees of our company. They are licensed, bonded and insured… our stellar reputation depends on it!
  2. Home care is for people who are sick or elderly.
Not true. Many families employ caregivers for their aging parents even though they are not ill. A caregiver can assist with showers, meal preparation, medication reminders, shopping, organizing, and more. We also provide care for veterans, handicapped and disabled, post-operative, and dementia care to those 18 and older. Those that just need a little help often turn to FirstLight to assist with their activities of daily living. At FirstLight, we treat all our clients as family and will settle for nothing less than exceptional care.
  3. Home care is more expensive than assisted living.
According to Genworth’s 2015 Cost of Care survey, the national median hourly rate for home health care is $25/hour. In contrast, the national median cost of a one-bedroom residence in an assisted living community is $3,600 per month (some regions are considerably higher). There are many ways to pay for home care including reverse mortgages, VA benefits, and long-term care insurance.
  4. Hiring individuals is less expensive than hiring a Home Care Company.
In the short term, paying an individual as a caregiver may seem to be less expensive, but there are pitfalls to be aware of: workplace injury, fraudulent employment practices, legal issues and reporting requirements. The employer is responsible for actions of employees in the workplace and can be held liable for workplace injuries. FirstLight carries a full portfolio of insurance to include Worker’s Compensation and Liability Insurance. Our clients are protected against injuries or fraudulent employment practices, which provides peace of mind. FirstLight caregivers undergo a full DOJ background check, DMV checks, and drug screening. We focus on hiring extraordinary people, so you can focus on your loved one’s health and happiness.
