YouTube Search Optimization: Why AI Cites Small Channels Over Big Ones

YouTube Studio Setup: Save Your Money, Use Your Phone

If you’re about to sign a contract with a video studio so your YouTube videos look more professional, don’t do it. Save your money.

I audited a channel for a business owner who was going to a studio every month. The studio filmed, edited, and published to the channel. The videos looked like a talk show, and almost nobody was finding them. The titles were the names of the episodes, not what the episodes were about. The descriptions were two sentences. No tags. The white-glove package came with a branded coffee mug, and not one description that told YouTube who the video was for.

I’ve seen it twice this year, from two different studios. Same beautiful set, same empty search results.

Someone in the same industry recording on a phone was showing up in search. Not because their video looked better. Because YouTube could read what it was about.

Sean Cannell of Think Media puts it this way: video is king, but packaging is the queen, and the queen runs the household. Looking professional and being findable are two different things. A good studio makes a beautiful video. It doesn’t make it findable.

The studio model isn’t sustainable, either. Book it, drive there, film, drive back. That’s half a day for one video, and in my experience a channel needs 30 videos or more before YouTube recommends it consistently.

A friend recorded a podcast in a carpeted closet with a cardboard box for a table and a blanket over it for the echo. You don’t need that. A phone from the last few years, a tripod, a wireless mic, and a window. Set it up in your office or on your couch and make it a chat with you.

Invest in your own equipment. Don’t invest in somebody else’s.

If you already have a channel and nobody is finding it, that’s what my YouTube Advantage Channel Audit is for. The full setup list and packaging checklist are at kathysizemore.com/blog/youtube-studio-setup-at-home.
